Honestly, I've never felt like it's more my time than now. I'm going to be a "somebody," I work too hard not to be. I have been in and around racing my entire life. Racing is in my blood and I'm part of a family of racers. My father, Joe Maynard raced dirt and asphalt, starting in a Ford Mustang II on the dirt, and retired driving an Oldsmobile Late-model at Tioga Motorsports Park. My Uncle Bill had a very successful career racing a NASCAR modified, as well as, other cars on the way. My Uncle John, Uncle Mike, Uncle Ed, and Uncle Matt, whom is also my current car owner, have raced in their lifetimes as well.
I started out in go-karts out back of my Uncle Bill's house on a homemade track. From there it moved to racing an Adult Light go-kart at Wyalusing Valley Motorsports Park. I raced a go-kart for 4 years, then, with intentions of buying a Slingshot, sold the go-kart and ended up without a ride in 2010.
In the winter of 2010 I got a call from Ron Shaffer at Shaffer Racing. He asked if I would be interested in driving a Slingshot for him during the 2011 season, and I told him I'd love to. Bringing sponsors to the table allowed us to build a fast racecar. We raced at Wyalusing Valley Motorsports Park all season. We managed to pick up 6 wins during the season and traveled to Greenwood Valley Action Track to pick up a 7th win, in my first appearance to the track, to total out our year.
Mid-season 2011, after we won our 3rd race of the year, Ron put his arm around me and said, "When we decided to put you in this car, we had no idea of how well you could drive a racecar." I'll remember that forever. After missing a race due to mechanical issues, and driving with everything to lose, I ended up winning the championship by 1 point.
Becoming a champion allowed me see the step above winning where your dedicated sponsors, crew, family, and fans make you realize it's not just about you.
I started my 2012 season in the number 21 Slingshot with a change of scenery, after the track we called home closed its doors. Shaffer Racing decided our best choice was to take the team to GVAT to race for a championship. After three races and 1 win at GVAT the Shaffer Racing team changed tracks and started racing at Dunn Hill 2 Speedway.
During the 2012 racing season I was also asked to start driving an IMCA Modified for the MEI Motorsports team, but with prior engagements as driver of the number 21 Slingshot, being a full-time college student, and holding a part-time job, I stretched my time too thin and had to resign as the driver of the number 0 IMCA Modified after just 2 weeks in the seat. The 2012 season ended with a few DNFs, 1 win, and a second place point's award.
My Uncle, Matt McGroarty bought the Slingshot from Ron Shaffer at Shaffer Racing. Racing has been my passion in life since I started in a go-kart, and one day soon I will be one of the greats. As I have said before, I'm not a wanna be, I'm a gonna be. My story hasn't changed; I've just started writing it.
The video above is when all hard work pays off. Dalton Maynard in the red and white number 21 puts on a show from the front all race long. A long year to make something happen, and when it happened, it was BIG.
